People tend to temporarily enjoy the security of following patterns that have been predetermined by a group of people whom they can then relate to and be accepted by. There is a sense of community and sameness of those who closely associate with the majority. These associations can temporarily make life much easier because fewer decisions must be made. Less thinking needs to be done because someone else is thinking for you.
New leadership is not necessary when the model has been created that provides this sense (all-be-it a false sense) of security for everyone. Changes will appear unnecessary. Originality will only seem to create conflict and will be discouraged if not ultimately forbidden. The standards will be enforced by the leadership with specific rules and laws and by informal exclusion by the group who shows the individualist how they are not wanted or needed.
This ideal requires fewer people in the roles of leadership who then have more power by not needing to explore other options told by subordinates for how changes might make a better society. The goal of expanding the mainstream group will be accomplished by turning suggestions into demands and creating more strict rigorous training programs for anyone who might behave in a unique fashion.
People won't readily go along with punishment for diversity until or unless it is believed by the majority that it will ultimately best serve everyone including those who are acting diversely. Beyond the goal of preventing individualist from self injury and more noticeable forms of disobedience, the goals for conformity will ultimately need to include every aspect the lives of the otherwise stray individualists.
Designs of reproduction which demand that undesirable traits not be included in our ideal society will be seen as the answer for not being able to adjust and control the behavior of nonconformist after they are born.
Marketing of products will give everyone a sense of identity and monopolies of large corporations can be built based on the discouragement of unique designs, unique management styles, and promoting people who were born from inappropriate families and backgrounds to positions of power.
Behavior modification will fit very neatly into such ideals. Those who have the capability to adjust to such rigorous training will be lulled into a seemingly comfortable trance where compliance is necessary and resistance is futile. Anyone who is not as capable of adjusting to such rigorous demands will obviously need to be punished and if necessary excluded from all the types of enjoyment that the mainstream is provided so that it will be obvious to the general public that such sufferers should in the future never be born. These extreme measures will be much more accepted after all efforts for curing these unfortunate misfits as been exhausted.
Politicians who demand that the government be the ultimate decider of what a model member of society should look and act like will find ways to incorporate the strict and exclusive training methods into public programs. When diversity is promoted as an alternative ideal by any type of underground movement that has gained power through individualism, single leadership and solidarity will be favored by the traditionalists who are seen as potential political allies so that the movement can be stifled and ultimately broken. Such movements will be courted and enticed by the subtle comforts of conformity so that misfits and nonconformist who can't lead or follow in traditional fashion will be clearly identified in stark contrast to the models they have promoted and rewarded for their compliance.
